An Introduction to the Chinese History Research Team of Xiangtan University

The Chinese History Research Team of Xiangtan University currently has 17 members, including 6 professors, 7 associate professors, and 4 lecturers. 15 members hold a doctorate degree and 6 are doctoral student supervisors. The team boasts such teaching and research platforms as key discipline of Chinese history in Hunan Province, Key Research Base of Hunan Xiang Learning, Xiangtan University Research Base of Hunan Xiang Learning Research Institute, Xiangtan University National Geographic Research Base, and Xiangtan University Zeng Guofan Research Center. It runs an academic journal, Hunan History Review (formerly known as Zeng Guofan Research). The research team has formed certain characteristics and advantages in such aspects as Hunan Xiang learning, study on Hunan history and Culture, researches on the ancient Chinese economic history (history of salt industry), on political system of the Ming and Qing Dynasties as well as problems involving dukes or princes of the imperial clans, and on the history of Qin and Han Dynasties.

In the past ten years, the team members have obtained 1 key project of the National Social Science Foundation, seven general projects, four later funded projects, and more than 20 provincial and ministerial projects. It has also won 1 first prize, 3 second prizes and 2 third prizes for outstanding achievements in Hunan philosophy and social science research. The team members have published more than 20 academic works and nearly 300 academic papers in People's Daily, Guangming Daily, History Monthly, Journal of Historical Science and Journal of Chinese Communist Party History Studies.

The principal of the team is Wang Jiping, a second grade professor, doctoral supervisor, and senior academic leader. He used to study under the guidance of Mr. Lin Zengping, a late famous historian. Currently, he is taking charge of 1 key project of the national social science foundation, has conluded 2 genral research projects and 16 provincial and ministerial research projects. He has published more than 80 research papers in such periodicals as Modern Chinese History Studies, Journal of Historical Science and has written quite a few monographs, namely, The Outline of the Development History of Chinese Socialist Ideology, Xiang Army Group and Hunan in the Late Qing Dynasty, and An Introduction to Chinese Modern Cultural History. He has successively obtained 1 first prize and 2 second prizes for the outstanding achievements in Hunan philosophy and social science research.
