XTU Successfully Holds 2018 Sino-African Law Deans’ Conference

The 2018 Sino-African Law Deans’ Conference, themed “Sino-African Legal Education and Service in New Era”, was held in Xiangtan on the morning of June 16. It was organized by the National JM Education Steering Committee and the China Law Society Legal Education Institute, and undertaken by the Xiangtan University (XTU). The conference aims to further deepen the dialogue and exchange mechanism between the presidents of both Chinese and African law schools, enhance the mutual understanding between the two sides, share rich experiences of the Sino-African colleges in personnel training and academic research, and expand mutual legal education and service cooperation, so as to provide a solid intellectual support for the all-round and rapid development of China-Africa relations in the new era.
 
Fifteen deans and professors from well-known African law schools and research institutes attended, including the University of Cape Town Law School and the University of Pretoria Law School in South Africa; the Strathmore Law School in Kenya; the Mekelle University Law School and the University of Gondar Law School in Ethiopia; the Makerere University Law Department and the Uganda Christian University Law School in Uganda; the Cameroon University Law School; the Open University of Tanzania Law School; the University of Seychelles; and, the University of Zimbabwe Law School. More than 20 deans and scholars from famous Chinese universities and research institutes also attended. They are from the China Law Society, the Renmin University of China, the China University of Political Science and Law, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, the Tsinghua University, the University of International Business and Economics, and the Jilin University.

XTU Vice President Liu Changqing, on behalf of the university, welcomed all the guests. In his speech, he introduced XTU discipline building and the academic education program cooperation with African universities, and highlighted XTU’s characteristics and achievements made in African law study. Liu Changqing spoke highly of the role and significance of the conference in the context of the continuous and in-depth development of China-Africa cooperation. He pointed out that Africa is China's good friend, brother, and partner, and also an important orientation and endeavor for China to promote the “Belt and Road” initiative construction. He believed that legal communication and cooperation are important in the process of continuously promoting the initiative. This conference would surely further strengthen and deepen China-Africa cooperation in the field of science of law and law, and establish legal bridge for China-Africa friendship, he added.

The participants held heated discussions on “Sino-African Legal Education and Service in the New Era” after the opening ceremony. The XTU Law School also reached preliminary intention with the University of Gondar Law School in Ethiopia and the University of Pretoria Law School in South Africa, to strengthen cooperation in legal education.
